Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal (also known as Permanent Hair Reduction) has been a difficult treatment to perfect since it’s release over 20 years ago. The different types of lasers used for hair removal vary from IPL, Diode, Ruby and ND YAG 1064. Each device differs in the depths that the target as well as in their functions.

  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is broad-spectrum light energy that travels to the more superficial depths of the skin.  This form of laser hair removal is unsafe for darker skin types and is inefficient for long term results as it does not reach the depths to where the root of the hair lies.
  • Diode lasers have been the Gold Standard for years as they showed to be safer for darker skin with a longer pulse width or energy delivery option. It also travels deeper which allows it to effectively target hairs that rooted more superficially in the skin However, it did not have lasting results for areas with deeper rooted hairs, such as underarms, bikini, chin and upper lip.
  • ND Yag is the most effective laser for more permanent, long-lasting results.  The ND Yag 1064 laser travels deep enough into the skin to target even the deepest rooted hairs.  Since the laser beam targets depths beyond where the skin’s pigment sits. It is also the safest laser for all skin types and colors. The ND Yag is popular amongst clinicians for the best results, however, in the past was unfavorable by customers as it was the most painful. In recent years, companies have played around with different pulse durations to deliver the ND Yag energy effectively to the targeted hair roots, making it much less painful, in fact, almost pain-free.  This form of delivering the ND Yag energy gives very temporary results as not enough energy can reach the target effectively and leave the hair “stunned” which stops the hair growth for a short period of time. In the end, the hair begins to lose it’s pigment (“turns white with fright”) and becomes less of a target for any other form of laser hair removal.

Here at Smooth, we have the most advanced technique of ND Yag 1064 laser hair removal called the Fotona Dynamis SP uses a Frac3 Avalanche (Fractionated 3 Dymentional) technique. This delivery travels in Fractionated Micro Seconds, creating a photo-selective thermolysis effect on the hair root to effectively destroy it. Each pulse has such a quick delivery that the root cannot hold on to the heat, making it the least painful yet most effective laser hair removal application on the market. The Frac 3 Avalanche technique requires  4-5 passes that break the root apart with each hit, leaving it ultimately destroyed. A series of 4-6 treatments are required for optimal results.
